Wrap Ukraine With Quilts
WUWQ Guidelines
WUWQ Label Guidelines
First of all, a Big Thank You to all our wonderful guild members for voting to finish and send some of our tops in storage to Ukraine. And for voting to support our individual members who want to send their own quilts by granting us space for a collection table at each meeting. You make me feel proud and happy to be a Piece By Piece Quilter.
What’s in a label?
Since I’ve been making quilts for Ukraine, I’ve become interested in how other quilters make their labels and even more in what they say on them. It’s easy for me to write a loving message to someone I know. I’ve made their quilt especially for them, and the label I put on the back is an extension of my thoughts of the person as I’ve sewn their quilt. And when I contribute a quilt to our guild’s philanthropy drive, it’s even simpler. I just sew on the Piece by Piece label that says “Made With Love”, which is a fine expression of what our guild is all about.
But what about personalizing a quilt for someone I’ve never met? Someone I know has been forced from their home. Who has left their precious men of fighting age behind to defend their country. Their Husbands, Sons, Fathers, Brothers, and Uncles. Their Cousins, Friends and Neighbors. Someone I know is cold, and scared. Who has endured unspeakable violence. What can I possibly say? Here are some of the messages I’ve seen.
“We hope this quilt finds you safe. Our hearts break for you, your family, friends, and all citizens of Ukraine. Wrap this quilt around you to keep you warm and feel our love and prayers as it warms you”
“Sending you our prayers. May this quilt bring you comfort”
“Please know that we stand with you and pray with you. Wrap this quilt around you to keep warm and know that we are thinking of you”
My own label includes these words written by my cousin’s Ukrainian son-in-law: “You are in our thoughts, our hearts, and our prayers“
However you phrase it, the messages all boil down to the same thing.
We see you, Ukraine. We see you, and we care.
The Wrap Ukraine With Quilts drive is all about making a connection between the quilt maker and the quilt receiver. It’s unlike any quilt drive I’ve ever participated in. As I write this, the HelloCottons.com quilt counter reads 22,114. That’s 22,114 loving messages to a stranger. This is why we do it. One Quilt To One Person.
What you should put on your label:

Adopt
If you want to help but can’t donate a quilt right now, you can adopt one of my quilts and I’ll sew your label on the back. Early adopters may select the stitching pattern I use to quilt “their” quilt. Let me know if you’re interested!
